THE SCIENCE OF ACNE

3 Minute Read (worth it)

The best way to win against acne is to know the science of how it forms, so that you can be best equipped and laser focussed in your efforts. We also believe that knowing the actual causes of acne can help you to overcome any feeling of guilt, because the science confirms that it is not your fault.

There are 4 steps in the formation of acne and these occur like dominoes:

STEP 1: "ANDROGEN INDUCED SEBUM PRODUCTION"

The presence of androgen hormones causes sebum production to go into overdrive. Sebum is an oily, waxy substance made in hair follicles and is useful for maintaining skin and hair health, but it becomes an issue when overproduced - this is actually why acne sufferers often also experience oily hair and skin. In theory all acne is, in fact, hormonal.

STEP 2: "KERATINISATION", WHICH ESSENTIALLY MEANS "BLOCKED PORES"

The process of keratinisation causes a combination of sebum and dead skin cells to block the pathway between the sebaceous gland (where sebum production is now in overdrive) and the surface of the skin. This prevents the sebum escaping to the surface and so it begins to build-up. It's important to know that this is happening deeper than the surface of the skin, which is why no matter how much you wash, cleanse and scrub, your acne continues to form.

STEP 3: "PROLIFERATION OF C.ACNE BACTERIA"

Hence why it's called acne! Everybody has this type of bacteria on the surface of the skin and ordinarily it is inconsequential. However, it begins to thrive and multiply within the build-up of trapped sebum. This combination of sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria is what can form pus underneath the skin.

STEP 4: "INFLAMMATION".

Sensing the proliferation of the c.acne bacteria, your body exhibits an inflammatory response to tackle it in self defence. This is what causes the sore, raise red bumps (aka: the typical red spot). It's really just your body trying to help!

WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN FOR YOU?

In short, it means you shouldn't place too much of a reliance on topical products, because they don't tackle the root cause - this is why we always recommend you use our anti-acne supplement which does tackle these 4 steps.

We love topical products and they can do a brilliant job at helping to reduce the SYMPTOMS of acne, but our philosophy has and always will be that the best approach is to target the ROOT CAUSE.

Do you find it a little odd that brands don't talk about this science - the cynical side of us believes this is intentional. You're more profitable to brands if you merely manage the symptoms of your acne but never actually treat it, simply because it means you're forced to spend longer buying their products. But we didn't start this business to make large profits - we started it to eradicate acne.
